Beethoven MO-DE

MO-DE is a Japanese word which describes a ‘shrine visit’ and also means to ‘pay respect’.

This website follows pianist Yu Kosuge’s challenge of performing all existing compositions by Beethoven with piano. She would like to ‘visit’ every piece she plays with great respect to Beethoven.

Yu Kosuge:

‘Now that I have finished the recording and cycle of all Beethoven Sonatas, I realized this wasn’t a goal but a new beginning. Every time I play one of his pieces, there is a new discovery, and this makes me hungry to learn more about him.

So I would like to continue this journey with you and play not only all his solo works, but also chamber music and songs that lead towards Beethoven’s 250th anniversary in 2020. I call this project Beethoven MO-DE.’

Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy. Music is the electrical soil in which the spirit lives, thinks and invents.

– Thoughts –

I would like to begin my thoughts throughout the journey with Beethoven with the texts I wrote for my cycle of the complete Beethoven Sonatas.
